Do you constantly find that you make your weight loss efforts harder and more difficult than what they should be? Do you find that you thwart your efforts each and every time you turn around without knowing why? Well, you are not alone… in fact, many people do exactly the same thing without their awareness. Unfortunately, that syndrome is even more common than you might think.
In my hypnosis practice I have a sign visibly placed in every room in the office. It is a simple read, but it provokes a lot of thought. The sign has a picture of a colorful parachute and across the bottom it says: “Your Mind is Like a Parachute – It Only Works When it is Open“.
Laurie was a client who noticed everything, from what people wore to the decorations in and around my office as well as how much weight people coming in had already lost. In fact, she noticed things that most of my clients had no idea nor cared about. And of course, she saw that parachute sign. This sign had her perplexed though, but because she didn’t want to appear like a fool, it took her a long time to actually come out and say something about it.
For the life of her, Laurie was unable to comprehend the correlation between the parachute sign and losing weight. So I sat her down after she approached me with her dilemma. “Laurie”, I said, “this parachute sign is nothing more than a metaphor. It can actually mean something different to each and every person looking at it.” I had then asked her what she saw when she looked at the sign. Feeling embarrassed, Laurie sheepishly replied that she only saw an open parachute, and nothing more. In her mind, the parachute was just a picture. She was looking at it very, very literally and was missing the finer points and message that it portrayed.
Rather than make Laurie feel even more foolish, I immediately agreed with her that that is exactly what was there. But now, I wanted her to imagine that the parachute represented her mind. As she turned her head from one side to another, just like a puppy listening to a new sound, and continuing to stare at the picture, all of a sudden, she got it! This huge smile spread across her face as the recognition of what I was attempting to subtly get across to her actually did get across. But then her face got really red. She was so embarrassed because it was the simplest thing but she had not seen it. Instead she had tried to make it even more difficult than it actually was.
How many of us actually make things much harder than they need to be? Have you ever heard the phrase, or even muttered it yourself – “No, that can’t be for real, it’s too simple.” I have heard that countless times from various people, because they have trained themselves to struggle in life. Anything simple to them is just wrong. Unfortunately, they have been missing the boat with that “stinkin’ thinkin’” Just think how much further in life you would be if only you paid attention to the simple things as well. Many answers are there right in front of our faces, but we choose to ignore them because it is “too simple” It can’t be the right answer. But guess what, many times it IS the right answer!
So why not ask yourself this. Is your mind opened to new things – even if it seems to be far-fetched? Is it even opened to old things? There are so many answers to our present day dilemmas that are available to us from our past. All we need to do is simply think “outside of the box” and search it out. Where would you be now if you had “opened your mind” to a suggestion or an off-the-wall comment you heard that could have assisted you in your journey. Did you, or perhaps do you react out of fear of the unknown? Or like the opened parachute, do you absorb all that you can and utilize what you have learned?”
Do yourself a favor and keep your eyes and ears open, and the next time you have the opportunity to have some “interesting” information come your way, be like the open parachute and open your mind. Think “outside the box”. You may be pleasantly surprised where it takes you!
