I am Looking to Lose Weight – How Often Should I Weigh Myself?

Grrr at the Scale

In my hypnosis practice I am frequently asked “How Often Should I Weigh Myself?” If you ask 10 people, you are liable to get 10 different answers. Let me ask, do you weigh yourself every day? More than once a day? My big question to you is WHY???

Are you aware that each time that you weigh yourself you will most likely NOT get the same answer. As you are trying to track your weight, wouldn’t that be a very confusing thing to deal with? What does that do to your confidence knowing that each time you step on the scale you weigh something different – and typically through the day your weight goes up. That is NORMAL!

Think about it. Early in the morning, say you step on the scale and you weigh 150 pounds. By noon, you have the urge to step on the scale again because you are being very diligent in your dieting. (A word I most definitely dislike – when you “diet” you feel like you are going to “die yet“.) You barely ate anything at all, but lo and behold, as you step on the scale, you have gone up 3 pounds!!! How terrible is that!!! How can that be??? Of course, by now, you are not taking into consideration the normal progression of your day.

Each glass of liquid (preferably water and NEVER diet sodas – they only succeed in making you hungry plus all the other problems associated with them) will add some temporary weight. That is the key word – temporary! Have you gone to the bathroom? Are you weighing with your clothes on? There are so many different criteria to take into consideration as to why you “gain” weight through the day. But once again, if you are eating healthy foods in the right amounts at the right time, that weight “gain” is only temporary.

In my estimation, and this is what I teach my clients, I suggest that you only weigh yourself once a week! Weigh yourself the same time every day. The best way to weigh (yes, a pun is there) is to do that first thing in the morning. Get up out of bed, then go to the bathroom. Empty your bladder and your bowels. Then totally undress. No clothes on at all. (Yeah, the door is shut and no one can see you…) THEN step on the scale. As you keep track of your weight on a weekly basis, you will find a nice steady decrease in the amount you weigh. If not, then you need to address what you are eating and drinking and the amounts, as well as the times you partake nourishment.

Of course, there are always those few clients who “insist” that they must weigh themselves every single day. I do my best to discourage that, but not always successful in that regard. For those clients who are addicted to the scale, then rather than add more stress to your already stressful life, by all means do weight yourself every day. Just make sure you do it in the manner as described above… same time each morning, go to the bathroom, remove all articles of clothing, then step on the scale, and of course track your progress. It probably will not move much from day to day, but overall you should be seeing a downward trend.

There is also such a thing as a plateau. Yes, it is real and not in your head. So when you are at a plateau, the scale may not move in the direction you wish, unfortunately. With some luck it will stay right where it is. Plateaus can last as little as 2 weeks and as long as 2 months. Believe it or not, plateaus are important. Remember, your body is steadily losing weight and everything needs time to catch up and stabilize. If you find that you are still not losing any weight after 2 months, then it is time to change some of your habits… whether they be food related or even exercise related.

Remember that stress can not only prevent weight loss but can also add significant weight gain. That too will reflect on the scale. The best stress reduction I know is the use of hypnosis. Each hypnosis session automatically incorporates stress reduction so that you have a much easier time coping with your every day stressors and also continue to lose your unwanted pounds much easier and faster.

Seek out a professional hypnotist/hypnotherapist to help guide you to your successful stress-free weight loss. And if you are one of those people who are addicted to the scale, by all means, let your hypnotist know about that, and ask that they incorporate into your sessions the desire for you to step on the scale only once a week.

Ye sright I get what you are saying but I only weigh myself about once a month now
as I think you also in your self know if you are going up or doing what you are after and coming down.
I am sure there is also a lot of things that you have to try as well as there is a lot of foods out there that really are just no good if you want to lose weight. Plus of course you have to also excersize.
