What is the Truth About Obesity?
Recent research published by Dr. David Kessler, the former Commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), points to some potential answers on obesity. In the past, he led the U.S. Government’s drive against addictive cigarettes. Dr. Kessler now suggests that millions of people around the world are increasingly sharing a new malady that he calls Conditioned Hyper-Eating. This, says Kessler, is a willpower-sapping drive to eat — especially the high-fat, high-sugar foods — even when not hungry. This condition occurs in the brain where these high-fat and high-sugar foods light up the brain’s dopamine pathway, the pleasure-sensing pathway. This is the same pathway that conditions people to alcohol and/or drugs, as they are constantly seeking pleasure via use of artificial means.
